Software Systems Administrator

Summary

The Software System Administrator’s primary role is to install, support and upgrade company virtual servers, software, database & storage to ensure high levels of availability and security of the supported business applications.  This individual is responsible for all virtual server system, software environments, local & cloud storage solutions. Software System Administrator will occasionally work with contractors and vendors supplying hosted or project-based solutions.  On occasion this individual will work alongside the Network Administrator to support & maintain servers, desktop and laptop computers, firewall and networking infrastructure & components as well as end-user support.

Primary responsibilities include

  • Installation, maintenance & support of company systems such as:
    • VMware/vSphere configuration & performance
    • Oracle database software environments including E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, JD Edwards
    • Microsoft Office 365 and related email configuration
    • Dell EqualLogic SAN arrays and Amazon cloud storage systems
    • Arcserve backup system including cloud replication
    • Hosted solutions including Salesforce, ADP, Amazon EC2
  • Maintain optimum system, server, application and network performance
  • Maintain current licensing and support contracts
  • Recommend, schedule, and perform software and hardware improvements, upgrades, patches, reconfigurations, and/or purchases
  • Conduct research on emerging products, services, protocols, and standards in support of systems software procurement and development efforts
  • Participate in negotiations with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to secure software products and services
  • Document technical configurations and how-tos for team use
  • Engage in capacity planning and the development of long-term strategic goals for systems and software in conjunction with end-users and department managers

Shared responsibilities include

  • Deploy workstations, servers, printers, scanners, firewalls, encryption systems, and host security systems
  • Provide end-user support on all supported systems
  • Manage communications (email, IM, IP phone) and connection solutions, including workstation connectivity, local area networks, internet, and web-based applications
  • Ensure the integrity and security of enterprise data on host computers, multiple databases, and during data transfer in accordance to business needs and industry best-practices regarding privacy, security, and regulatory compliance
  • Manage end user accounts, permissions, access rights, and storage allocations in accordance with best-practices regarding privacy, security, and regulatory compliance
  • Practice network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information
  • Maintain optimum system, server, application and network performance
  • Manage peripherals and devices, including printers and scanners

Required knowledge & experience

  • Proven installation & support experience with network, PC, and platform operating systems, including:
    • #1 Must have requirement is strong Linux (Oracle Enterprise, RedHat & CentOS) including command line expertise
    • Oracle database 11x/12x
    • SQL Server 2008/2012
    • Windows Server 2003-2012, Windows desktop ⅞
  • Application installation & maintenance experience with:
    • VMware 4x, 5x, 6x
    • Database management (Oracle, SQL)
    • Arcserve UDP & Backup systems (or equivalent solution)
    • Amazon Cloud EC2 & attached storage (or equivalent solution)
    • Oracle E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft and/or JD Edwards on Linux & Windows OS (maintenance of OS, database, web & application tiers)
    • Microsoft Office 365 (or in-house Office Suite w/ Exchange)
    • Dell EqualLogic PS 3000-6000 iSCSI SAN
    • Active Directory / DNS
    • Symantec Endpoint Protection (or equivalent solution)
  • Working technical knowledge of current systems a plus, including the following (or equivalent solutions):
    • SonicWall TZ series firewall
    • Dell PowerConnect switches
    • Cisco wireless system
    • Comcast VOIP
  • Working knowledge of local area network administration
  • Scripting experience a plus
  • Experience documenting and maintaining configuration and process information

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years software systems administration.
  • Bachelor’s’ degree or formal technical training and equivalent proven business experience.
